Bay Area Campus hosts ‘soleful’ team endeavors

The Bay Area Campus Academic Affairs team recently hosted a quarterly general faculty meeting in San Jose with more than 140 faculty in attendance. The campus said goodbye to Alex Orozo, who has served the Bay LFAC for 10 years, and is relocating to the Midwest. The team welcomed Dr. Marla Kelsey, Associate Provost of the John Sperling Center for Educational Innovation to present on Next Generation Teaching. Additionally, the campus success coaches were each presented with an Above & Beyond award, based on their individual “assists” to faculty and student success.

In recent community-minded efforts, the Bay Area Campus has contributed more than 185 pairs of athletic shoes to the Nike® Reuse-A-Shoe program. The program collects old, worn-out athletic shoes for recycling and transforms the materials into new athletic and playground surfaces. The shoes donated by the Bay Area Campus staff, students and faculty will be used to benefit recreational organizations and school programs in the area.

Indianapolis Campus hosts book drive

The Indianapolis Campus recently held its 4th annual book drive for the local Riley Children’s Hospital (RCH). Thanks to donations from staff, faculty, students and community members, the campus delivered 2,000+ books and movies to the RCH library, helping to double their goal. On behalf of University of Phoenix, the campus also made a $5,000 monetary donation, which RCH will use toward purchasing eBooks and games that can be shared among facilities.

San Antonio Campus

San Antonio Campus helps celebrate Armed Forces Day

San Antonio, also known as Military USA, recently hosted the Military River Parade in celebration of Armed Forces Day. To assist with the festivities and parade—the first of its kind in the nation—the San Antonio Campus teamed up with the Paseo Del Rio Association (PDRA), a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 to promote, protect and preserve the San Antonio River Walk. The campus staff kicked it off in April by volunteering time making yellow ribbons to be purchased by the community in honor or memory of those who serve or have served. The ribbons were tied to trees throughout the River Walk.

On National Armed Forces Day in May, staff members set up 2,500 chairs throughout the River Walk. Afterward, several staff members boarded the red, white and blue University of Phoenix river barge and hosted alumna Karlyss Rutledge, who served in the U.S. Army, along with her service dog, Sgt. 1st Class Bear, who is also a military veteran. Staff members Diana Francis, Daniella Gonzalez and Natasha Duskin (featured above) entertained parade goers with patriotic songs, including The Star Spangled Banner.
