Chicago first-responders

Youth learn the value of giving back at Chicago first-responder event

Last April, University of Phoenix held a first-responder event in Dallas with the local police department and Boys & Girls Club. Volunteers stuffed teddy bears for children in need. The event was such a success that the Chicago Police Department asked to replicate the program with their local Club. As a result, more than 30 UOPX volunteers and Boys & Girls Club members took a field trip to the Chicago Police Department. They toured the facility, learned about police operations and even expressed their individualism with a chalk project in front of the building. They topped off the night by outfitting and accessorizing 100 teddy bears for children in need. First responders will keep the teddy bears on hand to give to local children in crisis and traumatic situations. UOPX has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs since 2007. This is its first event with the Chicago PD.

Apollo Group donates more than
$20 million in 2011

In 2011, UOPX parent company Apollo Group and the University of Phoenix Foundation committed more than $20 million to local community initiatives. The company focused its giving in the areas of school and workforce readiness, community engagement and sustainability causes directly aligned with its mission to provide access to education.

Apollo suppliers donate $83,000 to disadvantaged youth

Apollo Group hosted a supplier summit and charity golf tournament last fall to rally suppliers to support Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa, Arizona. Since 1954, Sunshine Acres has been home to more than 1,600 children and it operates almost entirely on donations. Approximately 240 vendors representing 107 companies attended the summit and collectively donated $83,000 to the cause.

Volunteers gather to support
inner city arts education

Twelve arts education classrooms at Rosemont and San Pascual elementary schools are now equipped with new art supplies thanks to 150 volunteers from University of Phoenix. The University recently partnered with L.A. Works to collect art supplies and build easels to benefit the two Los Angeles Unified School District schools.
