![]() Bay Area Campus highlights alumni through community eventsThe Bay Area Campus recently sponsored a table for the Hispanic Charity Ball in San Jose, put on by the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley (HFSV). HFSV is a public foundation dedicated to inspiring community philanthropy and engaging people to invest in the health, educational achievement and leadership development of a thriving Hispanic community in Silicon Valley. Ten guests represented the Bay Area Campus at the black-tie event, including faculty members and alumni. ![]() Bay Area Campus hosts ‘green’ panel talksIn September 2011, the Bay Area Campus hosted a public discussion at the San Jose Learning Center that included key Bay Area green and sustainability leaders, community college students, UOPX staff and a keynote address by Jim Cassio. Approximately 50 guests were in attendance, among them Seth Mones and Melissa Antone, vice president and director, respectively, for Sustainability Policy & Programs from Apollo Group. Also present were representatives from educational partners Green for All and CleanTech. ![]() Hawaii Campus supports Race for the CureThe Hawaii Campus team raised a total of $245 for the Hawaii affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. During the October 2011 race, staff members, family and friends walked the 5K course at the 17th Annual Race for the Cure at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. The team was energized by thousands of participants and empowered to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. The Hawaii Campus has formed walk teams to support Race for the Cure since 2009. ![]() Madison Campus collects and distributes winter clothing for familiesIn honor of Make a Difference Day in October 2011, the Madison Campus staff and faculty hosted a donation drive for winter clothing to benefit the Koats for Kids program in the city. Staff and faculty worked several shifts to help with the event, which assisted more than 1,000 families in the Madison area. Bay Area alumni visit Wente VineyardsBay Area alumni gathered at Wente Vineyards in Livermore at a recent event. The group was treated to appetizers, a 45-minute wine tasting class and an opportunity to connect with fellow alumni. |

![]() Madison Campus volunteers roll up their sleeves for Days of CaringIn August 2011, volunteers throughout Madison, Wisconsin participated in a three-day United Way of Dane County “Days of Caring” event. Nearly 3,000 volunteers contributed their time and energy in working on a multitude of volunteer events throughout the city, totaling more than 12,000 hours. Madison Campus staff and faculty contributed to these volunteer numbers. Their efforts included delivering hot meals to the elderly, assisting seniors with home chores, working at Agrace HospiceCare Thrift Store and assisting the United Way in gathering, sorting and organizing donation items. ![]() Bay Area Campus serves up turkey dinner to those in needOn Thursday, November 22, the Bay Area Campus (specifically the Oakland Enrollment team and 25 other faculty, alumni and staff) supported the city of Oakland at the annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Oakland Marriott. This free holiday meal is served to more than 2,500 low income families, homeless and senior citizens in the Bay Area. Fairfield County donates $20,000 to public educationTo combat literacy challenges in its local community, the Fairfield County Campus made a $20,000 donation to the Stamford Public Education Foundation chapter of Everybody Wins!, a nationally recognized children’s literacy and mentoring organization. As part of the Power Lunch program, staff from the campus travel to KT Murphy Elementary School every week to mentor school children. Each one-hour Power Lunch session includes children and mentors reading aloud to each other, sharing favorite stories and discussing books. |
