Iam lucky that my kids love fresh fruit and vegetables, but I also want to make sure they understand the work it takes to grow them.

So, this spring we planted a vegetable garden comprised of: strawberries, carrots, watermelon, cantaloupe, onions, carrots, tomatoes, green beans and several herbs. The look on my 4-year-old daughter’s face when she plucked the first red tomato off the vine and bit into it was priceless! I have also realized that tending to a vegetable garden is a great workout since it requires about two hours of weeding a week.

This issue of Phoenix Focus explores these twin topics: healthy eating and exercise. “Healthy eating on a budget” explores how to incorporate healthier food purchases into your diet without blowing your budget. Next, discover how to burn calories and avoid the workout doldrums in “9 ways to make fitness fun.” Then, find out how his determination and drive led James Cannon, DHA ’09, to a thrilling career as the Chief Physician Assistant for the United States Coast Guard.

By the way, if anyone has any great recipes for green beans, please email me. It looks like that will be our bumper crop—and I had such high hopes for the strawberries.
