Arizona high school students prepare for the workforce
For the third year, University of Phoenix presented the JA You’re Hired! program in partnership with Junior Achievement of Arizona. The program consists of innovative curriculum leading up to a full-day event in Phoenix. The curriculum, developed in part by University of Phoenix, prepared the students for the event by covering interviewing techniques, résumé writing, conflict resolution, problem solving and interpersonal communications.

At the March 30 event, more than 350 students from 19 Arizona high schools attended workshops and competed in events focused on job aptitude and competence, business networking, work readiness skills and entrepreneurship. There were more than 50 Arizona companies in attendance, including University of Phoenix, and many offered the students summer internships based on the aptitude they demonstrated through the curriculum and competitive events. Northwest Indiana’s Community Investment Committee and Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition promoted reading and financial literacy to Iddings Elementary students in Merrillville, Indiana.

Financial literacy for elementary students
Northwest Indiana Campus Community Investment staff held an event to promote reading and financial literacy. The event centered on the presentation of children’s book Three Cups to kindergarten and first grade students and their parents. University of Phoenix Northwest Indiana’s Community Investment Committee teamed up with the Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition to bring Tony Townsley, an Indiana businessman who inspired the book with lessons he taught his own young children, to Iddings Elementary in Merrillville, Indiana. Townsley explained to the students that they can use three cups to divide their income into “spending,” “saving” and “charity.” The Campus staff helped the children decorate their own “three cups” to use at home. In addition, each child in attendance received an autographed copy of the book and a goody bag.

The Northeast Online Division donated 8,000 pounds of food to St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, Arizona.

Northeast online donates
8,000 pounds of food to St. Mary’s Food Bank When the Community Investment Department rolled out the 2011 corporate challenge of collecting nonperishable food items for the St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 1 to April 1 in Phoenix, the Northeast Online Division team decided to step it up a notch.

Donation boxes were located throughout various buildings in the Phoenix area, but none were in either of the buildings that the Northeast Online Division occupies. Fearing donations would be low, the Committee of Recognizing Employees made a special trip to St. Mary’s Food Bank to gather collection boxes of their own, made posters and sent weekly emails to the floor to remind employees about the food drive. C.O.R.E members also counted donations on a daily basis, and tracked the Division’s donation progress on charts throughout the buildings.

When all was said and done, the Northeast Online Division collected 5,847 individual cans/items for the food bank. That is 40 boxes, or nearly 8,000 pounds of food.
