More than 40 Southern California alumni attended the alumni mixer at the Dave & Busters in Arcadia in January.

Southern California Mixer
The Southern California Campus meets each month for a recurring monthly mixer that takes place at four different locations the third Thursday of every month.

 



Volunteers from the Detroit Campus collected food and sorted donations for the local food bank.

Detroit feeds the hungry
Detroit Campus students, faculty and staff volunteered at the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan in February. Detroit Campus staff collected more than 360 pounds of food, and then the volunteers helped sort food donations at the collection center. The donations provided approximately 275 meals for those in need.

   

The Southern California Campus donated a $25,000 SolarWorld Sunkit system to the Boys and Girls Club of Pomona Valley at an LA Kings game. LA Kings alumni mixer
The Southern California Campus hosted Los Angeles’ largest Kings hockey game mixer with 600 alumni and their families attending the game and pre-game mixer. The Campus donated $25,000 during a pre-game on-ice ceremony to the Boys and Girls Club of Pomona Valley, to purchase a roof-top Sun-Kit solar panel system for the club and save them more $2,000 per year. The club also co-hosted an Earth Day event with the Southern California Campus to unveil the new system and celebrate sustainability on April 22.

Appreciation

The University of Phoenix and LA Kings "Teacher of the Month Appreciation" program recognizes Southern California K-12 teachers in the counties of Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino. Recipients are awarded tickets to one of the LA Kings’ regular season home games in addition to being recognized in front of thousands of fans at the game. Christina Singhi, from Glen A. Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights, California, was named March 2011 Teacher of the Month.

 



Louisville Campus volunteers built bookshelves and donated more than 400 books to the Boys and Girls Club of Kentuckiana.

Louisville Campus volunteers built bookshelves and donated more than 400 books to the Boys and Girls Club of Kentuckiana. The Campus also kicked off a literacy campaign with a book club, in which volunteers read to a small group
of kids at the Boys and Girls Club on
Monday nights.

   


Kansas City Campus volunteers participated in the Westport St. Patrick’s Day 4-mile run March 12 in Kansas City, Missouri, for the Bacchus Foundation.

In March, the Kansas City Campus participated in the Westport St. Patrick’s Day 4-mile run in Kansas City, Missouri, for the Bacchus Foundation, which introduces and integrates young adults into Kansas City’s civic, cultural and educational communities.

In March, 27 alumni attended an alumni reception at the West Des Moines Marriott. The topic of the evening was Human Behavior Networking featuring Richard Rowe. The event focused on the techniques behind networking, covered the "7 dos and don’ts of networking," and alumni were able to practice giving their elevator speech in less than a minute.

 



Puerto Rico Campus participants took part in the 5K en Familia, a race benefiting Hospital del Niño.
    Puerto Rico Campus gives back
In March, 28 Puerto Rico Campus participants took part in the 5K en Familia, a race organized by Hospital del Niño, a pediatric center that provides service to children birth to 21 years of age with physical and mental disabilities. The Campus also donated more than $2,000 as well as tote bags to the hospital.

Also in March, the Campus donated 81 computers to nine nonprofit organizations during a cocktail reception.

 

Utah inducts 95 into business
honor society

In March, 95 members were inducted into the Delta Mu Delta business honor society chapter at the Utah Campus. The invitation to join Delta Mu Delta is extended only to University of Phoenix junior and senior business students who have completed a sufficient number of courses at the University who are in the top 20 percent of their respective classes. To be considered, juniors and seniors must have a GPA of 3.7 or higher. Eligible graduate students must have completed more than half of their required courses and have a GPA of 3.85 or higher.

 

   

Ninety-five members were inducted into the Utah Campus Delta Mu Delta business honor society in March.

 



Northwest Indiana Campus collected more than 3,000 food items for the Northwest Indiana Food Bank.

Food drive competition
The staff and students at the Northwest Indiana Campus collected food for the Northwest Indiana Food Bank. Participants were divided into five teams that competed against one another to collect the most food during the month. Through the combined effort of the teams, the Campus collected more than 3,000 food items.

   


Staff and faculty from the Cincinnati Campus participated in the United Way’s Day of Caring in April.

Cincinnati Day of Caring
In April for the second year in a row, staff and faculty from the Cincinnati Campus participated in the United Way’s Day of Caring. More than 16 volunteers spent the day repairing, painting, sorting and replacing items in the homes of three local senior citizens. The remaining volunteers assisted in landscaping outdoor areas at a nearby assisted-living facility.

   

The Indianapolis Campuses collected more than 600 books for Riley Hospital in Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Campuses collected new and used books for Riley Hospital the month of March and presented them to the library in April. Volunteers collected more than 600 books.



Volunteers from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Campus joined the Junior Achievement Upper Midwest for a bigBOWL-a-thon.

In April, volunteers from the Minneapolis/St. Paul Campuses joined the Junior Achievement Upper Midwest for a bigBOWL-a-thon to fund and help raise awareness of Junior Achievement’s mission of inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. To raise money for the event, the group had an "all-you-can-eat" pancake breakfast as well as a raffle where the winners got some valuable UOPX goodies. Overall, the Campus raised more than $700 for the event.

Kansas City promotes literacy
In April, the Kansas City Campus participated in Literacy Kansas City’s 17th Annual Corporate Spelling Bee in Pierson Auditorium at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Teams from businesses from across the metro area faced each other in the ultimate corporate spell-off. The Bee also featured live and silent auctions. Donations for the auction helped underwrite Literacy Kansas City’s mission to advance literacy among Kansas City-area adults through direct services, advocacy and collaboration.

   

The Austin Campus participated in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Shave the Way event, a fundraising program for childhood cancer research. The Campus provided face painting and activities for children.

Austin Campus shaves the way
For the second year in a row, the Austin Campus participated in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Shave the Way event on March 19. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer research. The Austin Campus had a team of 5 shavees who raised more than $2,000. The Campus also hosted a University of Phoenix booth with kid’s activities like face painting, coloring, puzzles, hula hoops, stickers and stamps.

 



The Savannah Campus presents a $1,000 check to benefit the efforts of Lady Bamford/Wesley Community Center.

Books, brownies and berries
The Savannah Campus participated in the Books, Brownies and Berries reading event at the Lady Bamford/Wesley Community Center, which serves women and children with priority given to children who are low-income, homeless and of differing abilities. In addition to reading to the children, the Campus donated more than 300 books and presented a $1,000 check to benefit
the Center.

Utah Campus serves local charities
The Utah Campus recently donated $500 each to four local charities including Murray Greenhouse, The Children’s Center, Ogden Christmas Box House and Washington County School District Foundation.
